Bruising with deep tissue massage is associated with the pressure on the muscle tissue. In deep tissue, the focus is on the underlying fascia beneath the muscle, using enough pressure to loosen areas that have "stuck" together, commonly referred to as "knots." The pressure needed to successfully treat knots can form a bruise if the knot is deep. It usually takes 24 to 48 hours to subside.

They were developed over 2 decades of teaching yoga and giving therapeutic adjustments to people while they were performing yoga poses. Over the years they were developed into special techniques that help align the body and remove tension.
