Where Is the Iliocostalis Thoracis?

This is 1 of 3 parts of a muscles called Iliocostalis muscles. They run up the back from the sacrum all the way up to the side of the neck.

This part of the Iliocostalis runs along the rib part of the back between the shoulder blade and spine.

What are the Symptoms of a Iliocostalis Thoracis tear or strain?

The Iliocostalis thoracis can be strained when the body leans forward to pick something up (especially when it's to the side a little).

Whiplash of the lower back can also cause a tear or strain in the Iliocostalis thoracis.

Pain around the shoulder blade close to the spine resonating down to the bottom of the shoulder blade. The pain can also radiate around to the front of the bodies lower ribs.

What is The Function of the Iliocostalis Thoracis?

Extension of the thoracic spine, lateral flexion of the thoracic spine, extension of the lumbar spine, lateral flexion of the lumbar spine.

  • Straightens (extends) the back as seen below.  (1 ) From a forward bend to (2) standing.

  • They also prevent the spine from coming into a forward bend. Often times you can feel these muscles stretch when you enter a forward bend.

Origin and Insertion of Iliocostalis Thoracis

Origin:
Superior borders of the angles of the lower six ribs, medial to the proximal tendon of the iliocostalis lumborum.

 

Insertion:
Superior borders of the angles of the upper six ribs and the posterior aspect of the transverse process of C7
